Repak Recycling Week 2011 - Recycle more in the workplace

Welcome to our 11th Repak Recycling Week, designed to highlight and encourage householders and businesses to recycle their used packaging.

Promotional campaigns such as this and Repak's direct funding of packaging recycling collections over the last 13 years, have helped Ireland grow its packaging recycling to over 626,000 tonnes (diverted away from landfill) in 2010, and increased our packaging recycling rate from under 15% in 1998 to well over 65% in 2010. Since 1997 Repak has invested over €225 million in supporting the recycling of 5.7 million tonnes of used packaging.

The theme for Repak Recycling Week this year is to “Recycle More around the workplace”. By taking your good recycling habits from the household to work with you. From our research we have learned that people are great at recycling at home with 98% of people regularly recycling in the kitchen, 51% regularly recycling from the bathroom and 34% regularly recycling from the bedroom. However we don’t seem to take these good habits into the workplace. Only 46% of people regularly recycle in the canteen/office kitchen and this drops even further to 28% at our desks.

This Repak Recycling Week we are asking everyone to make a conscious effort to recyclemore in the workplace. You can elect a Green Champion for the week to ensure that everyone is doing their bit. We have created a series of downloadable posters for you to place around the office to remind people of the often forgotten areas and materials that can be recycled. Hopefully after the week you will see how easy it is and continue on recycling in the workplace. We do it at home so why not do it at work too? Learn more by visiting recycle at work.

During Repak Recycling Week from 3rd to 9th October we at Repak ask you to do your best to Recycle More and Recycle Better.

Recycle More: increase the range of materials you regularly recycle. Learn more about what materials can be recycled by familiarising yourself with what your contractor will accept in your recycling bin.

Recycle More: recycle beyond the kitchen. Research shows that 98% of adults recycle regularly from the kitchen but this falls to 35% for the bedroom, 52% for the bathroom, and 20% for the home office or study. However also disappointing is that we appear not to take our good recycling habits in the household into the workplace, where a lot of used packaging materials arise. For example your used lunch packaging such as your sandwich paper bags, soft drinks containers, clear fruit or salad bowls, takeaway coffee cups (rinsed), pizza boxes (remove food residues) etc

Recycle Better: the quality of material presented for recycling is our responsibility and not just the responsibility of waste contractors. We must present rinsed materials for recycling to prevent cross contamination of other material (i.e. paper or cardboard soiled from unwashed food cans).
