Green Schools Programme
The An Taisce Green Schools programme is run by FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) and is known internationally as ‘Eco Schools’. Green Schools is represented in almost all EU member states and various countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, South America, Oceania and Asia. Over 50 countries participate and of these, Ireland boasts one of the most successful programmes. In Ireland Repak is currently one of the main sponsors of Green Schools.
Its aim is to increase students’ and participants’ awareness of environmental issues through classroom studies and to transfer this knowledge into positive environmental action in the school and the wider community. The programme is a stepping stone to bigger and more fundamental change in our schools, homes wider communities. Schools that successfully complete the seven steps of the programme are awarded a Green Flag.
There are over 3,100 Irish schools involved - that’s 645,000 students and 44,000 teachers!
Ireland’s Green Schools divert 12 tonnes of waste from landfill every school day, save 3.5m units of electricity (over €550,000) and enough water to fill 86 Olympic sized swimming pools every year!
That’s positive environmental changes in our behaviour and a lot of savings too.
