    To recycle everything you have sorted and put aside, check that all items can be placed into your recycling bin. If items are not accepted, keep them aside for recycling at your local recycling centre, which are open at weekends if you canno't get there during the week.

    Ensure all cardboard and paper is kept clean and dry. Flatten all used cardboard boxes and remove any plastic inserts or windows. Fold used paper rather than scrunching it up, as this aids segregation and takes up less space in recycling bins

    Ensure all glass bottles s are cleaned and rinsed of any residual liquids. This helps keep flies and wasps away by removing any  sugary residue  You don't need to scrub off the labels, since they will burn up when the glass is melted down for recycling.

    Use reusable boxes or bags for collecting up your glass recyclables and bringing them to your local recycling facilities. Please do not leave used boxes or bags at local recycling banks as this is littering and subject to the usual litter fines.

    Keep glass colours properly separated and please do not leave used glass on the ground at recycling banks as this slows collection and attracts unwanted dumping.

    Food and aluminium cans should be cleaned and rinsed, placing lids inside the washed cans and finally squash for maximum efficiency of collection systems.

    Aluminium food trays should be cleaned, ensuring that food left-overs are removed. Then squash down the tray. If there is more than one tray squash them together before placing in your recycling bin.
  9. Plastic recycling tip II:

    Recycle all plastic containers with the number 1 and 2 placed inside a triangle, usually on the base. These cover items such as plastic drinks bottles, milk bottles, shampoo bottles, detergent and washing up liquid bottles, soap dispenser bottles and shower gel bottles; as well as yogurt drink bottles. Rinse these thoroughly and remove the final contents. Wash and squash before placing in your recycling bin.

    Many homes have access to brown bin systems for food and garden waste. Recycle all food waste, vegetable and fruit peelings by wrapping them in old newspapers before placing them in your compost bin for collection.

    Recycle your used batteries. All shops selling batteries have collection boxes for the return of used batteries.
  12. Electrical recycling tips

    Recycle any old or broken electrical items in your local recycling centres or by returning them to an electrical shop. Under law all shops selling electrical items are required to take back old used items on a one for one or a like for like basis (e.g. old kettles for new kettle).
