Everything is going green these days and we are now in an age of greener machinery.  PepsiCo is introducing new smart farming technologies with the aim of helping its suppliers to halve their carbon and water footprints of their foods over the next five years.

Farmers who supply foods such as oats, apples and potatoes to the maker of Quaker Qats, 7up, Pepsi drinks and Walkers crisps will start using internet crop management tools, low carbon fertilisers and greener machinery.

What is now being called a ‘black bag’ epidemic sees some of the country’s most scenic spots being tarnished with waste as householders continue to avoid their waste charges.

Local authorities have had to deal with a huge increase in dumping due to the current economic downturn, and anticipate an even higher amount over the Christmas period. Ian Davis from the PURE partnership project which was set up to combat dumping in Wicklow and Dublin uplands is concerned about the dumping over the holiday period stating ‘

”Over the Christmas, we see an increase higher than during any other period. During November and December people are clearing out their sheds and getting the house ready. Then in January people are going around offering a very low price for the removal of rubbish and invariably that ends up in the mountains”

Fines are quite considerable if a person is conivcted of handling waste over to an unauthorised collector or seen to be illegally dumping so ensure that you dispose of your waste correctly over this festive period, and for all the regular recyclers out there find out where your local recycling centres are by clicking here.

The newest and most innovative product which has just been added to the range of Cork packaging supplier Southern Tapes & Packaging is compostable cutlery made from plant extracts.

The Cork distributor set up a new section called Down 2 Earth Materials which will target the fast-food industry, coffee shops, deli counters and caterers at large events, Down 2 Earth Materials now offers a complete range of disposable food packaging including a coffee cup with a lid and a soup container – all of which have been certified as compostable.

This type of packaging currently costs 20% more than conventional oil-based disposable packaging, so it is a difficult product to sell in the current climate. However, Mr. Lee believes is it something which will take off in time. ”This is the future of disposable packaging.”
